A woman of substance and an artist now, Sundari had never had an easy childhood. Her father, being an extremely poor man, could not afford to give her the education she so badly wanted. Being the elder one she stayed at home taking care of her younger siblings while her father went out to work. Married into a very poor family early on in life Sundari’s life has been consistently a test of perseverance. She started weaving rugs to improve her life state and that of her family. While her husband’s income is not sufficient to fuel her dream of educating her children, Sundari weaves rugs to make this dream come true.
The weaver, Sundari, was perplexed about the design she wanted to make on her rug and while cooking food for her family, she realized that an unassuming cabbage, is very inspiring. She created motifs inspired by a cabbage throughout the rug and added more elements from her kitchen, including ‘Kalash’ (an earthen water pot) and Jhaalar- an intricate and dotted design on the walls of her kitchen. Sundari has also woven on the rug, the plants that she saw from the window of her kitchen and she has tried to add drama to the design by splashing geometrical designs on the rug, which she believes is very modern. She has named her rug ‘Paudha-Ghar’, which means a garden.
