Santosh is a 30 year old artisan from Itawa, Rajasthan. She’s been weaving for 12 years, spending the last 10 as a member of the Jaipur Rugs family. Her husband is a general laborer who helps her raise three daughters, all in school. She places a huge emphasis on education for her daughters and has set an example of how a woman in rural India can create beauty by seizing the opportunity and working hard.
With her second Artisan Original rug, Santosh wanted to make something truly special, using her imagination, memories of things she’s seen in her past, and things that are a part of her home and life now. Throughout the months of her knotting this rug, a few things constantly whirred in her mind. Flowers, her home made of bricks, and clay pots for storing water, play a leading role in the carpet but the defining element was inspired by her two youngest children, Snehalata and Kismat. As young as they are, they realized this rug will be in the floor of a home bringing people together so they wanted their mom to put the word “WELCOME” in English at the bottom of the rug. They explained to her that writing it onto the rug means it’s inviting guests into the home. Placing diyas on the word welcome was Santosh’s way of adding an auspicious cherry on top.
