A weaver from 5 years, Neetu resides in Manpura with her 3 school-going children, her husband, who is employed in police force and 3 goats. She completed her first self-designed rug in a time span of 2 and half months. When she was asked to make a rug with her own design, Neetu was confused and scared at first. She was motivated during the workshops by the Jaipur Rugs’ design team after which she got inspired to try 2 inches of weaving. Later she never looked back.
RangeenOne would think that with her third Artisan Originals rug, Neetu would have no problem designing and knotting it, but it was anything but easy. For a month, she struggled with coming up with creative designs, even stopping weaving completely for a 2-3 day period to recollect her thoughts. It was with the motivation of her Bunkar Sakhi, Shanti, that she felt less pressured to make the “perfect” rug. With a myriad of elements, the most recurring theme are boxes of different sizes, shapes, and colors. Those boxes represent walls, as her loom overlooked a wall, taking something sedentary and turning them into something colorful and creative. The central shakkarpara figures are also made up of tiny boxes, resembling a Rubik’s cube. She did not like the initial lighter yarn colors chosen, so she went out of her way to gather brighter shades from her artisan neighbors, leading to the rug’s name, Rangeen, which means colorful. After completion, Neetu sighed and stated that this rug “was as difficult to make, as it is to marry off a daughter”.
