Nirmala is a 26 years old woman from Udaypuria village, Rajasthan. She learnt the art of weaving from her mother and has been doing this since 16 years. She stays with her husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law and two daughters. Her husband’s name is Ram Kishore and aspires to be a teacher one day. While her elder daughter is in 7th grade, her younger daughter is in 2nd grade. Nirmala says that she loves weaving and wants to continue with it. She says that weaving allows her to work from home and saves her time which she spends in doing household chores.
The design of the rug is an artistic recreation of the weaver’s thoughts. Nirmala, a weaver who is highly experimental by nature, did not have a design traced for the carpet beforehand as she wanted to exhibit her change of thoughts on the rug. Hence, she has named her rug “Manmarzi”, which is a Hindi word for “My will”. The rug has imprints of elements present in the nature such as mountains, leaves and flowers. The floral motifs on the rug are a contemporary interpretation of flower patterns that the weaver had knotted earlier on a rug with traditional design using a pre-defined design map. Nirmala allowed the color scheme to emerge with each passing day and the evolution of the colors and patterns on the rug are a representation of her ever-evolving personality.
