Laxmi is a 40 year old artisan from Manpura village of Rajasthan. She’s been weaving for 20 years, spending the last 10 as a member of the Jaipur Rugs family. Her husband is a general laborer who helps her raise five daughters and one boy, all in school. She places a huge emphasis on education for her daughters and has set an example of how a woman in rural India can create beauty by seizing the opportunity and working hard.
Chaand TaaraThis rug by Laxmi was an attempt to reflect nature’s beauty in true sense. She designed and created various patterns in the shape of a crescent moon, hence this name, Chaand Taara which means the moon & stars. She adorned her rug with colorful patterns and designs, all woven together to amplify the beauty of her favorite rug. “A lot of tourists come to visit us in our village. I have observed that they often spend their time on our terrace, watching the moon. So, I thought of dedicating this rug to our beloved moon and the stars,” says Laxmi with a sweet smile.
