Achi is a veteran artisan from Aaspura, Rajasthan. She’s been weaving for 25 years and loves doing Manchaha (AO) rugs because she can imagine and weave without boundaries. Her designs are often abstract with no defined lines or patterns with a preference for both bright and neutral colors. She has two sons and two daughters and hopes to teach them to knot rugs, as well.
This rug was was initially started by Artisan Original veteran, Dafli Devi, but as she became busy with other and family obligations, her sister-in-law Achi stepped in and completed the rug. Dafli Devi’s nascent design was filled with the natural beauty she found around her village including stony hills, fields of wildflowers, and meandering streams. Once Achi took over, she took a much more playful and festive approach by knotting in her children’s toys and auspicious themes such as a marriage, Diwali, and Christmas. She placed larger and larger eyes to start her design as they symbolize beauty in her community, then pulled the bridal motif together with the kalash pots and decorative entrance she saw in the marriage. Then she placed Christmas trees like the one she’s seen in a film and hid the ever-lucky turtle inside of them. Finally, she brought out her favorite holiday themes of Sankranti Kites and Diwali candles and topped it off with a honeycomb design inspired by the original artisan, Dafli Devi.
