Individual, often uneven knots are visible on the back of these rugs, mirroring the pattern visible on the front.

Individual tufts of yarn are punched into a pre-made backing fabric with a special tufting gun
This tool hooks and pulls yarn through the backing to form loops or piles
This process is less skill and labor-intensive than hand-knotting, so rugs can be completed in a shorter amount of time

How To Identify:

These rugs have a canvas backing glued on to hold the knots in place and usually have a cut or cut and loop pile.

Flat-weave rugs are created on a loom, rather than knotted or tufted
These rugs are often reversible, with designs on both sides
Because they only consist of warp and weft threads they don’t have the thickness of knotted and tufted rugs
Flat-weave rugs are lightweight and often require rug pads to stay in place

How To Identify:

With their woven construction, these rugs are flat and don’t have a pile.

Weavers use a loom to create these rugs by hand
The loom holds the warp (vertical) threads in place and allows the interweaving of the weft (horizontal)
Different looms are used to produce different types of rugs: including felted textures, shag, naturals or solid and border rugs

How To Identify:

Hand-loomed rugs usually have a low to medium pile (other than shags, which have a deep pile) and can have a canvas backing added to them.

Jaipur Rugs Receives Workplace Human Rights Certification

Jaipur Rugs Inc. announced that its manufacturing facility in Jaipur, India has been certified to the Social Accountability International SA 8000 Workplace and Human Rights Standards. Jaipur is the first company in India with ""Design, Development, Manufacturing and Export of Handmade Carpets and Floor Coverings"" scope and the 11th carpet company to receive SA 8000 certification in India. The certification covers Jaipur_s factory, which associates more than 40,000 people across the country. The facility also conducts various on-site awareness programs, on-site training programs and works with the Indian government on social initiatives.

Asha Chaudhary, CEO of Jaipur Rugs Inc. stated, ""This certification is the latest example of Jaipur,s commitment to ensure the company_s operations protect both its workforce and the environment. We value the dedication and commitment of our employees and want to make certain that they work in an environment that is safe and values their wellbeing.""

SA 8000 is an internationally recognized standard based on International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions and the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on Rights of the Child. The standard focuses on child labor, forced labor, health and safety, freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours, compensation and the implementation of an efficient management system.
